History on Tan Quee Lan Street, Bugis

District 7 of Singapore comprises of Bugis, Bencoolen Road, Rochor, and Beach Road. The Downtown Core is a planning area situated in an urbanised Central Area. Kallang surrounds it to the northeast, Rochor to the north, Marina South and Marina East to the east, Bukit Merah to the south, Straits View to the southeast, Singapore River, Museum and Outram to the west.

Being the main financial area of Singapore, it is home to headquarters and offices of various companies and government institutions, including the Supreme Court and Parliament. This area has witnessed the transformation of Singapore.

Middle Road lies at the centre of Rochor and Downtown Core and sits in the Central Area of Singapore. The Hainanese immigrant community initially occupied the area. The contributions of this community are evident in the Chinese food fare. Middle Road is among the earliest roads to be constructed in Singapore that were featured in the George Drumgoole Coleman’s map of Singapore in 1836.

Back in the 9th century, Malay Street and Hylam Street of Middle Roads were famous for their traditional Japanese shops until the Second World War. Today, Middle Road is the ultimate destination for tasty Hainanese Cuisine.

Bencoolen street runs from the junction of Jalan Besar and Rochor Road to the intersection between Orchard Road, Stamford Road, and Fort Canning Road. The street is home to serviced apartments, and hotels such as Somerset Bencoolen, Bayview Hotel Singapore, Summer View Hotel. It also features prominent landmarks such as Bencoolen Mosque, and Sim Lim Square.

Bugis Street has a blend of the old and new Singaporean culture. Situated in the old Bugis Street are buildings like Bugis Junction shopping complex. The New Bugis Street got its new look after the mid-1980s revamp. It is now home to a plethora of stalls selling various food. Bugis Street has evolved to become retail heaven featuring several night clubs, eateries, and shopping malls.
